The main focus of the department’s work is surgical treatment of the severe congenital heart disease in newborns and infants. Annually, the department performs about 600 surgical procedures, including up to 200 operations in children under one year of age. The lead surgeons of the department are Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine Vasyl Lazoryshinets, Serhii Syromaha and Yaroslav Truba with a team of experienced specialists.

We use an individual and scientific approach to patient treatment when choosing surgical tactics, which is based on the results of the most modern clinical studies, and we perform the entire range of surgical operations for congenital heart defects in children.

In recent years, the institute has implemented and performed almost all of the world’s existing cardiac surgical operations for congenital heart disease in children of various age groups with excellent results. The department is working on changing approaches regarding the choice of treatment tactics for patients with congenital heart disease in preference to minimally invasive and endovascular methods. Our experience is widely used in other cardiac surgery centers of Ukraine. Since 2010, the Institute has been a leader in Ukraine in endovascular treatment of congenital heart defects.

We specialise in:

• Prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart defects;
• Surgical treatment of complex congenital defects, in particular hypoplasia of the left heart;
• Modern plastic surgeries for Ebstein anomaly;
• Surgical treatment of congenital heart disease with minimally invasive operative access to the heart, including the use of video thoracoscopy;
• Endovascular (without chest incision) closure of ventricular and atrial septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus;
• Operations for congenital heart defects without the use of donor blood.
• Field interventions in perinatal centers, departments of neonatology in profoundly premature babies.

• Mini-invasive operations for congenital heart defects;
• Treatment of adults with congenital heart defects;
• Endovascular closure of the ventricular septal defect;
• Endovascular implantation of aortic valve and pulmonary artery valve;
• The program of hybrid operations in hypoplasia of the left heart;
• In cooperation with “Novick Cardiac Alliance”, we are working on improving methods of surgical treatment of patients with congenital heart disease accompanied by severe pulmonary hypertension;
• Use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in surgery of congenital heart disease;
• Development of mpodern approaches in obstetric cardiology and cardiac surgery in cooperation with the State Institution “Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology”.
