The main scientific directions of the department’s work are aimed at developing new and improving existing methods of surgical treatment of congenital heart defects in newborns and young children.

Main directions of scientific research:

  1. Development and improvement of methods of surgical treatment of congenital heart defects combined with right ventricular hypoplasia by haemodynamic correction.
  2. Development and improvement of an integrated approach to the treatment of children with left ventricular hypoplasia syndrome.
  3. Implementation of a new scientific direction in obstetric cardiology and cardiac surgery in cooperation with the State Institution ‘Institute of Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology named after Academician O.M. Lukyanova’, which continues to this day.
  4. Improvement of methods of surgical treatment of patients with congenital heart disease accompanied by high pulmonary hypertension in cooperation with the Novick Cardiac Alliance.
  5. Work on changing approaches to the choice of treatment tactics for patients with CHD in favour of minimally invasive, endovascular and ‘hybrid’ methods.
  6. Development and implementation of protocols and strategies for surgical correction of aortic coarctation (combination of endovascular methods and surgical correction).
  7. PhD thesis (PhD): Dziuryi I.V. ‘Hemodynamic correction in the surgery of congenital heart disease’.
  8. Cooperation with foreign institutes and provision of internships and training for young specialists in the leading cardiac surgery centres of Europe.
  9. Annual participation of employees in conferences and webinars at the national, European and American levels.
  10. Training and education of interns in therapeutic and surgical profiles.

Main achievements of the scientific department:

  1. Development and improvement of modern innovative technologies for endoprosthetics of aortic coarctation in GUCH patients.
  2. Developed and implemented plastic valve-preserving operations in patients with Ebstein’s anomaly. The experience of our clinic is one of the largest in the world – about 350 operated patients with Ebstein’s anomaly.
  3. Medical support was provided to about 6700 pregnant women, including 250 high-risk pregnant women, 115 surgical and cardiac interventions, 71 caesarean sections and 3 physiological deliveries.
  4. Local protocols for the management of patients with congenital heart disease in newborns, young children and adults, as well as in pregnant women with congenital heart disease, have been developed and will be included in the new Guidelines ‘CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE DURING PREGNANCY’
  5. The Institute has a unique and largest experience in Ukraine in endovascular treatment and ‘hybrid’ operations for CHD.
  6. Employees of the Department are full members of professional associations of Ukraine, Europe and America.
