Head of Department
Rudenko Serhii Anatoliiovych
Today, the Institute annually performs, over 1000 different cardiac surgeries in patients with coronary heart disease. For the first time in Ukraine, the aortic coronary bypass surgery was performed by academician G. V. Knyshov in 1972. Since than, over 20,000 patients with ischemic heart disease were provided with emergency care. Since 2000, coronary artery bypass grafting is performed by the off-pump technique . For over 18 years, more than 14,000 surgeries have been completed, this is one of the largest experiences in the world. The technique of off-pump aorto coronary bypass surgery allowed not only to reduce surgical trauma but also to reduce the time of rehabilitation of patients in comparison with on-pump technique, but also significantly reduce postoperative mortality.
Over the past years, mortality is 0.5% (in the US – 2%), this result is the best in the world.
In the department under the guidance of academician AV Rudenko was developed an original method of surgical care of patients with left ventricle aneurysms of the heart. The surgical experience of the department exceeds more than 2,500 of such surgeries. The concentration of patients with such a severe complication of myocardial infarction in one center has led to the fact that the department is one of the few in the world where successful surgeries on the left ventricular aneurysm make up 99%! According to The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, in the United States the mortality after surgical treatment of left ventricular aneurysm exceeds 8%.
In recent years, was created a multidisciplinary team of specialists from Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery, the National Scientific Center “Institute of Cardiology of M. D. Strazhesko”, V. P. Komisarenko Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism (a cardiologist, an endocrinologist, a surgeon) to improve the results of surgical treatment of patients with coronary artery disease with concomitant diabetes mellitus. According to all cardio-surgical associations in the world, the results of surgical treatment of patients with diabetes are significantly worse than in patients without diabetes.
The implementation of a new algorithm for treatment of patients with coronary artery disease with concomitant diabetes has completely eliminated the effect of diabetes mellitus on surgical results. Postoperative mortality in our patients with diabetes is not higher than in patients without diabetes, and in some periods was even lower! After the internship in the leading clinics of the world, surgeons of the department have implemented aortocoronary bypass surgery with mini-access. Today, our surgeons achieved surgical techniques not only for coronary artery bypass surgery, but also for all related pathologies (valvular surgery, cardiac rhythm recovery, ICMP treatment, PI IVSR).
The department staff provide surgical care 24 hours a day for 7 days a week for patients with myocardial infarction. Every fifth aortic coronary bypass surgery in the department is performed in an urgent manner.
